Water District Endorses Buying Mecca Farms for $55M
SunSentinel
Palm Beach County has invested over $100 million trying to turn Mecca Farms, consisting of 1,919 acres, into a biotech industry hub. However, environmental objections and the failing housing market left the partially developed land vacant and created additional maintenance costs for the County. Now, as part of the $880 million Everglades restoration plan, the SFWMD is entertaining a deal to purchase Mecca Farms for $55 million. This would not only provide debt relief for the County, but also offers an unprecedented opportunity help restoration efforts aimed at restoring wetlands and natural habitats, improving water quality, and increasing the vitality of agricultural operations.
